Is CO2 extinguishers are suitable for proiliant under fire?

It sure seems like it.

It won't conduct electricity.

It shouldn't damage the components (except for perhaps cold shock).

But if on fire, I don't think you need to worry about that.

No residue to clean up.

If a server is on fire, the damage is probably already done: you should consider that server already lost until proven otherwise.


In a server room environment, CO2 extinguishers are used to minimize damage and disturbance to other servers and other equipment around the burning one. But the priority should be stopping the fire in whatever way possible, before it can get totally out of control.


After the fire has been extinguished, it's time to find replacement hardware and restore from backups. If some parts of the burned server turn out to be salvageable, that should be considered an unexpected stroke of luck.
