CPU upgrade possibilities

Hello,

I am currently a student studying network administration. I am looking at buying a proliant1850r dual pII 450. I was wondering what are the cpu upgrade possibilities? I can find very little info about it.

Thanks

Rich B.

Re: CPU upgrade possibilities

You can install a PIII 600 in it...
Take a look at this doc:
ftp://ftp.compaq.com/pub/supportinformation/techpubs/qrg/proliant1850r.pdf

The 600Mhz processor for the 1850r = SP#155592-001 which includes the Heatsink from Compaq will run you about $650.00 shipped.
Enjoy!

Re: CPU upgrade possibilities

Very true... if you find the CPU elsewhere, you just need a big Heatsink. I don't recommend it, but you may be able to remove and re-use the original ones.

Also, my original message was not complete. I just looked at your original message again and the doc's again, you will also need to buy the I/O board to upgrade to PIII processors. SP#155350-001 will run around $700.00 as well. This would turn into a money pot before long. If you are just going to use this to study with, a dual 400 is still a nice box.
Enjoy!

Re: CPU upgrade possibilities

Thanks I appreciate your prompt help. I think I'll just leave it as is. It will still be a great linux box.

Re: CPU upgrade possibilities

I've purchased the 6/600 Pentium III 512K Processor Option Kit (153555-B21) for about $350 from a company called Chestnut Micro (www.chestnutmicro.com). Remember to use the reference materials provided by HP when looking for part numbers. Also remember that some servers and their QuickSpecs documents may be listed under the "Retired Servers" section as this ProLiant 1850R is. Good luck.
