Can i have a Shared Hot Spare Drive

Hi,

I have just setup a new server, as follows:

ML350g5
6x72gb sas hot plug drives
e200i 128mb

2 Logical drives, A for boot and B for Data.

Logical Drive A
Raid 1 (2x72gb drives)
OS

Logical Drive B
Raid 5 (3x72gb drives)
DATA

I have one spare drive, i would like to make this a HOT SPARE for both logical drives, is this possible and if so HOW?

I can make it a HOT SPARE for either of the arrays but not both of them, i know i have done this on the old controllers before.

Thanks

Roger

Re: Can i have a Shared Hot Spare Drive

According to Smart Array E200 manual, you should be able to assign a spare to several RAIDs.

When adding a spare drive to an array, an unassigned drive must exist or a drive already assigned as a spare must exist on another array. You can assign a single spare to any number of arrays or assign
separate spares.

Thanks for the reply, thats exactly what i have read too, but i cant seem to see the option, it lets me add a drive to a logical drive but not to both?

DONE IT,

basically just add the drive to both arrays, i thought if i added it to one it wouldnt let me add it to B, but it did. great and thanks

Re: Can i have a Shared Hot Spare Drive

What is the difference between Shared Hot Spare and Global Host Spare?? Is there exist any global hot spare theory? If yes then what is that????
