Cannot load SPP from image on DL380Gen8 with ESXi 5.1

We have a number of DL380Gen8 servers with the latest ESXi installed.  Also, iLO is activated and licensed.  However, when trying to load the latest SPP (HP_Service_Pack_for_Proliant_2013.02.0-0_725490-001_spp_2013.02.0-SPP2013020B.2013_0628.2) either as a virtual disk or from the physical DVD drive it fails with the error "Error: hpsum failed to transform hardware discovery results).  Where to look for a solution?
