Cannot upgrade firmware on 72G 15k SAS drives.

I've been trying for the last couple days to apply the HPD8 firmware to two hard drives in a DL320. I downloaded the appropriate sexe file from http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/Document.jsp?lang=en&cc=us&objectID=c01186030&jumpid=reg_R1002_USEN and when I run it on my system I am told it doesn't find any drives.

The system is an Ubuntu 10.00 amd64 server with the two SAS drives configured as a RAID1. Using getlibs I was able to get the SmartComponent to run but as I mentioned, it doesn't find my hard drives.

I've attempted other means of upgrading with no luck:
Upgrading from the Firmware Smart Update Manager from within Linux and pointing the software directory one that included my update. (CP008447.sexe)
Upgrading from the Firmware Smart Update Manager as a boot device and allowing it to search for a removable device for supplemental updates.
Creating a bootable USB Key with the Firmware Smart Update Manager on it and the update (CP008447.sexe) included.

Any help would me greatly appreciated. I can rebuild the server but I would like to retain the hard discs. I don't know if its not finding my discs because they are configured as a RAID1 or not.

>> to apply the HPD8 firmware

As you can see the 72G 15k SAS drives are totally different models.

For example for DH072ABAA6 version HPD7 is the latest.

At HP you have for example these 72GB 15k drives with the same part number, but totally different disk models each with different firmware.

What disk model do you have?

Hope this helps!

As said, part number may be the same for different models.

What model do you have, e.g. DH072ABAA6 ?

Hope this helps!

Re: Cannot upgrade firmware on 72G 15k SAS drives.

Another example:

For DF072ABAA8 your link

http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/Document.jsp?lang=en&cc=us&objectID=c01186030&jumpid=reg_R1002_USEN

lists HPD8

but this link

http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/SoftwareIndex.jsp?lang=en&cc=us&prodNameId=3675981&prodTypeId=329290&prodSeriesId=1127655&swLang=8&taskId=135&swEnvOID=54

lists

HPDA and finally HPDB as latest.

You need to get the model name and search for it.

Maybe your disk has already newer firmware then listed in your link???

Hope this helps!

Torsten.

Re: Cannot upgrade firmware on 72G 15k SAS drives.

And finally, reading the notes for this firmware shows

This disk drive component requires :

* HP Smart Array E200/E200i firmware version 1.50 or later
* HP Smart Array P212 firmware version 1.06 or later
* HP Smart Array P410/P410i/P411 firmware version 1.06 or later
* HP Smart Array P400/P400i firmware version 1.80 or later

...

so you need to met these requirements too.

Re: Cannot upgrade firmware on 72G 15k SAS drives.

Sorry, here are the particulars of the hard drive:

HP Model: DF072ABAA8 Firmware HPD3

I thought I had included the model number in the original post, sorry about the confusion.

I've not been able find which model of Smart Array Controller I have unfortunately. I had tried to find the model from the card but I have been unable to identify the version of HP Smart Array.

Thanks.

Re: Cannot upgrade firmware on 72G 15k SAS drives.

You will see this during server boot, from SMH and in ACU.

Consider to download the latest firmware maintenance DVD and boot from this disk.

Hope this helps!

Torsten.

Re: Cannot upgrade firmware on 72G 15k SAS drives.

I've got firmware maintenance dvd 9.20 downloading now. Hopefully it can identify the Smart Array and apply the firmware upgrades. The Firmware Maintenance CD didn't, so I'm not entirely optimistic.

Re: Cannot upgrade firmware on 72G 15k SAS drives.

As well the hpacucli reported that it couldn't find a controller.
