Cat5e vs cat6 cabling for Prolian DL360 G5

Hi There,

We have just finished instalaltion of around 10 DL360 G5 servers and i was wondering there will be any difference if we patch them with Cat5e instead of Cat6.
Since category 6 has higher reliability for networks compared to category 5e networks but that will make really difference?.

Thanks in advance

Re: Cat5e vs cat6 cabling for Prolian DL360 G5

Dear Serdar,

There are currently no protocols that require Cat6. For future applications, Cat6 might be required to reach maximum perfomance (Both support 1000BaseTX, but Cat6 has a higher bandwidth then Cat5 and Cat5e). On http://www.broadbandutopia.com/caandcaco.html you can find a good general description on both technologies, which can hopefully help you decide.

Personally: if Cat6 fits within your budget (it is slightly more expensive then Cat5 and Cat5e), go for Cat6 for the extra reliability and to be fully prepared for future use. if it does not fit within your budget, don't panic because cat5e has enough capabilities to support all current Ethernet applications.

Best Regards,
Bart
