Change Partition size on Hp Pro ML570 G2

Condition:
Hp Pro ML570 G2;
RAID 1, tow storage 36G;
Smart Array Controller 642;
Windows Server 2003;
Tow servers which have same configuration.
Question:
The Size of C is too small, I want to change it. But I must ensure Domain controller runing.
I want to solve it as follow:
1. Copy necessary data of Domain controller.
2. Pull out one storage drive(2) and insert into the other server without any other storage drive.
3. Setup the storage drive(2),then install and configure Windows server 2003 and ensure it same as old Domain controller.
4. Resume data of the old Domain controller on the "new Domian Controller".
5. Erase the storage drive(1) of old Domain controller .
6. Install the storage drive(2) on old Domain controller, then insert (1) into it.
7. Configure RAID 1 newly.
Can I do it on the way?
What I must prepare?
Plese teach, thanks.

Re: Change Partition size on Hp Pro ML570 G2

How many partitions you have on RAID1 ?
What is the disk C size ?
I don't think your plan will work:
you cannot copy Domain controller data and move it to different server, only "dcpromo" operation may be used.

Complementarity:
tow Partition: C(about 6GB)
I need to copy ActiveDirectory data only.

Re: Change Partition size on Hp Pro ML570 G2

Much easier will be use partition resizing software to resize C partition.
You can use, for example, Partition manager
http://www.partition-manager.com/corporate/server/
or Symantec VolumeManager
http://sea.symantec.com/content/product.cfm?productid=7

You can move page file from disk C to free some space as well.

Re: Change Partition size on Hp Pro ML570 G2

I have tried to use PQMagic 4.0 to solve the problem, but no success.Because the setup of storage drive used SmartStart.

Re: Change Partition size on Hp Pro ML570 G2

I don't think it is related to fact you use SmartStart to create RAID1.
If PQMagic 4.0 = Partition Magic, you use outdated version. Current version of Partition magic is 8.05.
Anyway, DO FULL BACKUP before any partition utility using.

Re: Change Partition size on Hp Pro ML570 G2

Thank you, Iqor karasik.
I write error, the soft is PQ ServerMagic 4.0. I tried it at Nov 11 2005 and telephoned to HP. A technician told me no best way that adjust partition size but no destroy data. So I suppose if there is a best way.

As Igor suggested you can use "disk expansion" software. It's the simplest way. I prefer Acronis. It's create bootable CD (as other software) for resizing operation with GUI.
Don't move drives between server - you can crash OS.

Re: Change Partition size on Hp Pro ML570 G2

Can you point the Active Directory information to another drive before you do the work? I'm not sure but I think you can change the folder location of the databases then reboot so that it takes affect. This would at least get the AD data onto another set of harddrives.

Re: Change Partition size on Hp Pro ML570 G2

Hello Li dayong,

do you have free space at the end of your C: partition? If yes, please take a look at the diskpart utilitiy from microsoft.
