Compaq DL380 G2 issue after Smart Array update

Now the server will not come up. I just get a black screen after post.

I'm running Win2k3 SP2.

Is there a rollback feature or perhaps a bootdisk I can use to rollback?

Thanks for your help.

Re: Compaq DL380 G2 issue after Smart Array update

Hi,

If you have a RILOE (Remote Lights-Out) PCI card installed then remove it and attach the video cable back to the system board video connector. Try this and see if it makes any difference.

Re: Compaq DL380 G2 issue after Smart Array update

Thanks for your response.

All lights are green. Let me clarify my question. I was a bit tired last night so I wasn't able to provide full detail.

So, after I updated the NIC, Video and SmaryArray 5 drivers or updates, I rebooted and it came up with a "ESC to continue" or The option to configure the array. I selected configure array and everything looked normal so I rebooted and hit ESC the following round.

Then the screen would blank out but all the lights on the server were GREEN. I don't know if this had to do with video or Smart array.

I'll try to methods provided but its been YEARS since I've played with Compaq servers.

Re: Compaq DL380 G2 issue after Smart Array update

Another FYI,

When the server has a blank screen, shouldn't I atleast be able to ping the server? I'm a bit concerned since after the NIC drive update, it disabled both NIC. I tried to enable the NIC being used (nic2) but it wasn't enabling so I had to enable nic1 and configure the appropriate address.

I thought that was rather weird. Now, I also can't RDP obviously b/c I can't ping.

Any help would GREATLY be appreciated.

Re: Compaq DL380 G2 issue after Smart Array update

The RILOE (Remote Lights-Out) PCI card isn't installed to my knowledge. I saw the cable on the FRONT LEFT side of the chasis and it was still in its original plastic package. I assume this is the cable to connect the card.

Re: Compaq DL380 G2 issue after Smart Array update

Hello,

Was it F2 To configure ? If you have pressed F2, this might have erased all DATA from the disks;
Refer Page 117 of
http://www.icare.hp.com.cn/TechCenter_StaticArticle/8583/11182.pdf

Does this sounds familiar ? As you mentioned You went into the Configuration to check Settings.

James.

Re: Compaq DL380 G2 issue after Smart Array update

I never hit F2. The only options that come up are F8 and ESC.

Then F9-F11? I have to double check.

Re: Compaq DL380 G2 issue after Smart Array update

Hello,

Try re-seating ALL possible components;
Memory; HDD; processors; heatsinks; PPM; PSU; etc etc.

If it still doesn't help, try booting with MINIMUM configuration.

James.

Re: Compaq DL380 G2 issue after Smart Array update

I'll give that a shot.

I've also thought about updating the BIOS from floppy but don't want to get deeper into issues.

Re: Compaq DL380 G2 issue after Smart Array update

Since its a NO video situation & not exactly NO post/ No boot;

First thing to try would be a Different Video, change cables;
Also if there is a KVM switch, Bypass that.

James.

Re: Compaq DL380 G2 issue after Smart Array update

but shouldn't I atleast be able to ping the server regardless of video?

I'll try what you recommended and thank you for your quick response.

Nope. I can't ping at all.

I did update the NIC driver as well.

Re: Compaq DL380 G2 issue after Smart Array update

I'll have to check the RILOE (Remote Lights-Out) PCI card as Brian mentioned above.

Re: Compaq DL380 G2 issue after Smart Array update

Hi,

you can try clearing the NVRAM (CMOS) with the switch on the system board by invalidating configuration too

If you have 2 processor, remove one along with its corresponding PPM;

I just ran HP's smartstart diagnostic and nothing was flagged. I'll try the NVRAM and CPU suggestion.

Re: Compaq DL380 G2 issue after Smart Array update

Hello,
You need to switch the SW6, switch #6 to "ON".. then power on the server;

as it says, it considers the configurations as invalid > Acknowledge it;

Shutdown; Put the switch to default position.

Restart again. Let us know if it helps.

James.

Re: Compaq DL380 G2 issue after Smart Array update

Ok, just tried all the above and even took out the battery to reset the BIOS password since I wasn't able to get in and reset RVRAM.

Any other help? I do appreciate everyone's response.
