Compaq ML570 not booting

I have performed...

System erase
ROM updates
ACU

And everything looks OK.

When I create the partition and load the OS and it needs to reboot it tells me there are invalid disk.

Can anyone shed some light on this subject.

I am useing Smart Start 7.20

Kirk

Re: Compaq ML570 not booting

Which ML570 is this? G1/G2/G3/G4?
What OS are you trying to install?
What controller are the hard drives connected to (which SmartArray)?

Re: Compaq ML570 not booting

I am attempting to install Win 2k3.

It sees two 4200 array cards.

Another problem is durring the boot I don't get the F10 option I see it say push F10 but it continues on and ignores the F10 key stroke...

I am at a loss...

Thanks

Re: Compaq ML570 not booting

Hi Kirk,

better you try to use SS 5.40 or 6.xx versions, because SS 7.20 is newer, ( logically there should be no problem using SS 7.20, but sometimes it happens). It seems that you haven't configured your system partition properly boot again with SS and reconfigure your RAID + system partition.

Re: Compaq ML570 not booting

I am assuming you have all your drives connected to the SA4200 controllers. How many drives? And what type of RAID array have you configured in the ACU?
If you have configured a RAID array and the boot controller is set for the SA4200 that is cabled to the drive(s), then I would suggest trying a simple DOS install test. You need a DOS diskette with FDISK. Boot from disk & run FDISK. Create a small primary bootable partition (50 MB is fine). If the server will boot from this partition then the problem is probably specific to W2003 install. Review the requirements here:

A basic step is to update System BIOS (if outdated) from here;

Re: Compaq ML570 not booting

You need Smart start CD 5.5 or Lower only
http://h18004.www1.hp.com/support/files/server/us/subscription/PSM_subscription.html
System Partition should be installed and from F10 you need to set one SA4200 Controller as a First bootable controller (select Right one, SCSI cable connected to Primary cage) from Configuration wizard.
Than you can continue with O/S Install.
W2K3 does have Drivers for 4200 Controller.

Main Point to Install System configuration Utility and set boot controller Order.
There is other way how to install O/S without SS CD 5.5 or lower, if you have Optional Integrated Smart Array Controller.

Re: Compaq ML570 not booting

Does it matter that I have already performed ROM updates on the HDD's and array controllers?

Re: Compaq ML570 not booting

Updates absolutely wouldn't harm, however with 4200 you need to use Smart Start CD < 5.5, to configure System Configuration Utility F10 and ACU.
With newer Controller you have access to F8 over POST where you can Configure Array Configuration. If you would have Integrated Smart array Controller Chip it also would gave you if Firmware 1.50 on it. And System Configuration can be installed from Floppy diskettes. Than you can migrate to 4200. (Downgrade from 5300 can be also as an option, however it requires extra step) As long you don't have integrated only one way is Smart Start CD.
