Compaq Proliant 5000

What I want to know is, should my Proliant 5000 power supply power up when not connected to Proliant 5000. My 5000 was working perfectly then stopped working completely, turn on and nothing, so I bought a new power supply and the same - turn it on and nothing - how much needs to be connected for at least power supply fan to power up?

Power supplies must be connected to the motherboard in order for the power supply to work. There are sensor electronics inside the power supply which disable the supply if it is not connected.

Thanks, I finally figured out that the side panel had to be put back on too, I appreciate your help
