Compaq Proliant 800 6/350e upgrade options

Hello, I searched all over this website but I can't find some information I need.

I want to upgrade an old Proliant 800 server. It has a PII 350 MHz processor. I would like to add another processor, some RAM and a larger HDD.

I believe I need parts 313611-B21 (processor), 313616-B21 (RAM) and 336370-B21 (SCSI HDD). However there is no pricing or availability for any of these parts. I am unable to even get a description, installation guide, or even a mention that they are compatible with my system.

I got the part numbers from the Product Information/options that came with the server.

It would be cool if there was a place on this website to enter my S/N and see my server's configuration as purchased.

Any information appreciated.

Re: Compaq Proliant 800 6/350e upgrade options

Angela:

The ProLiant 800 PII model has the capability to use up to the PII 450MHz processor.
You can find: 313618-B21 - 6/450 Pentium II 512K Processor Option Kit

The 313623-001 part number can be referenced for a 350MHz processor.

You would also need to order (327660-001) a VRM for the additioanl processor.
http://partsurfer.hp.com/cgi-bin/spi/showphoto?partnumber=327660-001

You can install up to 1GB of RAM:

256-MB 100MHz Registered ECC SDRAM Memory Kit - 313616-B21
128-MB 100MHz Registered ECC SDRAM Memory Kit - 313615-B21
64-MB 100MHz Registered ECC SDRAM Memory Kit - 313614-B21

And you can install a number of optional SCSI drives to the internal cage:
from 1GB to 18GB.

Hi John,

thanks for your prompt and detailed reply. The information is great.

Could you point me to a resource that shows me how much this is going to cost? i.e. part prices? Canadian or US dollars would give me a good ballpark.

The main thing I am interested in pricing is the Hard Drive.

Re: Compaq Proliant 800 6/350e upgrade options

Angela,

If your system is a Prolaint 800 350e model it has a different chassis from the other Proliant 800's and a different system board.

The 350e system board can go up to dual 550Mhz safely and I tested one which had been upgraded from 350Mhz recently. If the centre 4 characters of your system serial number are either of the following, you have the 350e model (CDG2 or CDG1).

If you do have the 350e model then upgrades are fairly easy as most of the CPU/Memory parts are common to the Proliant 1600 too.

Here are some option parts numbers (sales) and spare part numbers (service) which can be used to obtain the upgrades. This model also uses "Non-Hotplug" disk drives by default (Unless you have fitted a hotplug drive bay) so any disks you may require should be Non-hotplug models with a 68-pin SCSI connector as with the part you quoted "336370-B21".

Parts
-----

Memory
256Mb/100 Reg SDRAM -Spare Part 317749-001
(Option Part Number 313616-B21)
128Mb/100 Reg SDRAM -Spare Part 317756-001
(Option Part Number 313615-B21)
64Mb/100 Reg SDRAM -Spare Part 317745-001
(Option Part Number 313614-B21)

CPU with heatsink (VRM with option kit only)
PII 350Mhz/100 -Spare Part 313623-001
(Option Part Number 313611-B21)
PII 450Mhz/100 -Spare Part 179780-001
(Option Part Number 313618-B21)
PIII 500Mhz/100 -Spare Part 114525-001
(Option Part Number 401268-B21)
PIII 550Mhz/100 -Spare Part 144573-001
(Option Part Number 124779-B21)

Note: The Option part numbers for CPU should come with the required Voltage Regulator Module (VRM) but the spare part number will not as it is provide for repairs. Your existing VRM will work with CPU's up to 450Mhz. PIII 500Mhz and above CPU's require a different VRM. This is spare part number 329267-001.

Disk Drives (Non-Hotplug with 68-pin conn.)
18.2Gb 1.6" W-Ultra -Spare Part 336385-001
(Option Part Number 336370-B21)
18.2Gb 1" W-Ultra2-Spare Part 104664-001
(Option Part Number 388143-B21)
18.2Gb 1.6" W-Ultra2-Spare Part 386540-001
(Option Part Number 328943-B21)

Ubless you really have to I would not get these items from HP as you will pay a premium for them. You will be amased at how much of this can be found on E-bay and sold by reputable dealers and individuals.

www.ebay.com

Enter either the option part number or the spare part number and get the best deal you can. At least this way it won't cost you a fortune to upgrade this older model server.

The best of luck

Brian

Re: Compaq Proliant 800 6/350e upgrade options

Angela,

I forgot to point out a coupl,e of things in addition to my earlier reply.

Note:

1) Any 1.6" wide disk drives will occupy more physical space than the 1" drives. This may limit the number of disks you can fit in your existing drive bay.

2) If you simply want to buy an extra PII 350Mhz CPU to create a dual processor system you will need the corresponding VRM if you purchase the CPU using the Spare Part Number.
The VRM for CPU's from 350Mhz to 450Mhz is spare part number 327660-001.
It will come with the Option kit if you purchase this using the Option Part Number given in my earlier reply.

If you want to buy Spare Parts from HP you can use the Spare Part Numbers I have given and check them at HP's Partsurfer website.

Simply select your country and enter the Spare Part Number in the "By Part Number" field.

http://www.partsurfer.hp.com/cgi-bin/spi/main

For example the VRM above with Spare Part Number 327660-001 is $23.00 at Partsurfer
and the CPU (313623-001) is $187.00

Try Ebay first though.

I hope this helps.

Re: Compaq Proliant 800 6/350e upgrade options

Thank you Brian!

I would just like to note that I did try PartSurfer prior to posting, and whether I picked Canada or United States, the "price" column was always blank. Thanks for your great help.

Re: Compaq Proliant 800 6/350e upgrade options

Angela:
If the price is blank on PartSurfer, that means HP does not have the part in stock or no longer sell the part.
On older systems, where the warranty is no longer an issue, third party and e-bay is by far the best route for upgrading these servers. buyer beware though...
Enjoy!
