this is a clarification of the topic. Why would SURVEYOR lock up a server and what is it supposed to do

The survey utility will inspect your hardware and operating system and make a text file listing all relevent hardware and parameters (rom versions, driver versions etc.). This utility has been known to lock up a server when it runs into non-compaq hardware. Try removing any 3rd party hardware or run Inspect from the diagnostics section of the system partition.

Would the fact that the server uses Brooktrout fax boards cause SURVEY to lock up the server? Should this utility be left up permanently on any server?

Are lock ups were caused by a particular version of Survey?
Would all versions of Survey produce the same results?
Or would the latest version of Survey resolve lock up issues with Brooktrout?
