Crisis with DL385G1...added new hardware, blew both PPMs...

Hello,

I added a SA 6402 and 2 NC7771 PCI-X NICs to an aged DL 385G1. All of the hardware is listed as compatible with this server.

The system turned on but I didn't get video and I blamed it on the KVM in place so I trotted back to my desk to iLO in to the server.

iLO wasn't cooperating and I headed back to the server room. Now the Internal Health LED was flashing red and I noticed amber LEDs for LED #3 and LED # 12 (both PPM modules appear to have gone bad).

I removed the new hardware and tried to start the server - of course same condition appeared as soon as I reattached the power cords and pressed the power button.

Question is, will adding two new PPMs or VRMs or whatever they're called help or will I likely blow the new ones too? I didn't wear an anti-static wrist strap but I did ground myself prior to messing with anything. Also the riser card was removed while the power cords were NOT attached to the server and I am pretty certain the riser is seated properly (LED #2 is dark).

Any help would be most appreciated.

Regards,

Steve

Hello Steve,
yes, you are right, it is mentioned in dl385g1 quickspecs.. Strange it is not on the list of supported servers for controller.

Anyway, you did everything ok.
Do you have warranty or not?

Still no answers, the new VRM are here and I'm itching to try them - but am too afraid.

Well, it must have been plain ol' bad luck. I was onsite today and tried the new VRMs without anything in the riser cage. I added each card back one at a time expecting a melt down at each turn - but my server is now running merrily along with all the slots filled as described in the riser cage.
