Can anyone point me in the correct direction to locate these files?
Also, is it possible to get at no cost a SmartStart CD that will have the necessary drivers for Windows 2008?
Many thanks,
Lyman

SolutionFollowing are the links for firmware online, offline, CD and Smartstart CD ISO:

Or:
Offline ROM Flash for SmartStart Maintenance: ROM Update Utility - HP ProLiant DL380 G3 (P29):

Also, you may use "Firmware Maintenance CD " "The ProLiant Firmware Maintenance CD delivers a collection of firmware for your ProLiant servers and options"

HP SmartStart CD x32 - you can download the ISO image of the CD from following Link - you need to make CD from the ISO image, refer the installation instructions on same link below:
http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/SoftwareDescription.jsp?lang=en&cc=us&prodTypeId=15351&prodSeriesId=316529&prodNameId=3288130&swEnvOID=1005&swLang=8&mode=2&taskId=135&swItem=MTX-d7672226b6284520b9e292b9bd
To download the online firmware for other operating systems refer the following URL and select the operating system of your choice.

Re: DL-380 G3 BIOS / Firmware Updaet
you may also install the latest ProLiant Support pack for the latest drivers and updates, you will find the Support pack once you select the operating system. (Note: support pack not available for Linux operating systems.)

Re: DL-380 G3 BIOS / Firmware Updaet
Despite years in this industry I made an absolutely incredibly stupid mistake. I bought this G3 for the sole purpose of evaluating Server 2008 R2. As you know, this unit has a CD-Rom and not a DVD device. Server 2008 R2 is well over 2GB in size.
Any thoughts on a workaround?
Thanks,
Lyman

Re: DL-380 G3 BIOS / Firmware Updaet
i am glad to know that the information was helpful.
i over looked that OS info earlier, even though if you upgrade it to DVD drive and above 2GB memory it is not possible to install 2008 R2. As DL380 G3 is 32 bit platform and 64 bit os is not supported, as you know the windows 2008 R2 comes only in 64 bit and not supported on this server. You may try installing any 2008 x86 OS versions (previous versions of 2008). However, 2008 is not supported in this server and I have not seen on net if any one were able to install successfully on this G3 server.
If you manage to install 32bit os, Server Core installation requires only 1 GB RAM and 2 GB RAM for full installation, however, you can go up to 12GB RAM in this server. refer quickSpec for more information: http://h18000.www1.hp.com/products/quickspecs/11473_div/11473_div.html#Memory
And you may use USB external DVD rom Drive and this may be slow as it is USB 1.1.
You may start the manual installation from OS media and use the Smart array 5i controller drivers from the URL below:
http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/DriverDownload.jsp?prodNameId=266599тМй=en&cc=us&prodTypeId=329290&prodSeriesId=374803&taskId=135
Following links may help you:
HP ProLiant DL380 G3 Server series - Download drivers and software (2008 not listed as it is not supported)
http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/DriverDownload.jsp?lang=en&cc=us&prodNameId=3288130&taskId=135&prodTypeId=15351&prodSeriesId=316529тМй=en&cc=us&submit=Go%20%C2%BB
Troubleshoot a problem:
http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/SupportTaskIndex.jsp?lang=en&cc=us&taskId=110&prodSeriesId=316529&prodTypeId=15351
Try installing and update the status.

Re: DL-380 G3 BIOS / Firmware Updaet
Thank you again. I've been in IT for 28 years now and should have known better. I have NO idea where my head was at when I bought this. I.e., although I've worked with the DL-Series for many many years I just assumed that Server 2008R2 would run and never gave it another thought. Argh!
I guess at this point I can use it as a Linux box.
Thank you very much for your highly detailed and informative replies and the wealth of information you supplied!
Best,
Lyman
