DL 380 G3, Smart Array 6400 will not see new hard drive
We have a DL 380 G3 server with a Smart Array 6400 card. This was set up with 3 72.8 GB 15K ULTRA 320 SCSI drives using Raid 5. The first two drives are on Port 1\SCSI ID 0 and Port 1\SCSI ID 1. The third drive was given an address of Port2\SCSI ID 2, and was reported by the ACU as a failed drive. However, it did not show the red LED prompt that usually follows this type of failure.
Per HP, we replaced the drive, but the exact model replacement showed up on Port 1\SCSI ID 2, no longer part of the array. We replaced the SCSI backplane board per HP Support, and the new drive is still seen at Port 1\SCSI ID 2... Any thoughts? Maybe have them replace the Smart Array 6400 card?
Also, any docs available on how to set up an online spare with an extra 72.8 GB drive?... Didn't see this on the documentation.
Thx.

Re: DL 380 G3, Smart Array 6400 will not see new hard drive
What seems to be the problem with the array configuration. Take the backup before doing anything.
Where as please check the attachement

Re: DL 380 G3, Smart Array 6400 will not see new hard drive
You did not say whether this was working OK, and then you were warned that you had a problem? Then you check the ACU to see that it was showing so failure on disk 3.
You then removed drive 3 and replaced it in the same slot, but it did not see it as the replacement for the 3rd drive because it saw it as a different location.
That sounds about right?
At this point, I would get back to that original 3rd drive, because it was part of the array. You need to get the controller to resolve the array first before you can replace the drive. Most probably it was not the drive at all, but bad support from HP. You have to remember that those first level techs on the support line are just going but a troubleshooting document and are not very knowledgeable. From the description the controller messed up or the drive was moved, either way the controller is still looking for that original drive 3 OR a drive in Port2\SCSI ID 2.
Try putting the original back in service in another slot.
As for Online Spare, this is an option of the Configuration mode. For your existing configuration, the option is not allowed because it was not selected when configured. I see a mention, by using the Customer mode, with in Reconfigure mode, you can specify a value for OnlineSpare.
