DL 380 G4 Array controller 642 woes

We have a new out of the box DL380 G4. This box has a 6I onboard array controller. Along with this the box was ordered with a 642 PCI controller. The boss would like to use the 642 and not the 6I. The 642 has the battery backup installed and we can add more drives. The onboard 6I does not have the batteries insalled.

Bios sees both controllers. the 6I sees the onboard drives (6). 642 sees nothing.

I disabled the 6I in the bios and the 642 still sees nothing. Changed bios boot order to start 642 first....nothing.

The 642 is 192MB V2.34.

never had this problem before, built a ton of proliants....whats up and how can I fix.

boss is breathing down my neck and about to take the gas pipe.

Re: DL 380 G4 Array controller 642 woes

Hi Richard,

I have been told previously if DL380g4 is NOT the High Performance model, then you WILL need to buy a separate SCSI ribbon (part number 364471-B21) if you use either SA64x or SA640x controller, or it will not work.

Is your server a high performance model?

Thanks,

Gus

ps: if this has been useful please assign point.

Re: DL 380 G4 Array controller 642 woes

I sorta figured that it may have needed a ribbon cable...like the old rib cards. but since it was installed at the factory I fugured that it would be complete. Thanks guys...I'll scare up a couple of cables and let ya know.

Hi Richard,

Now I am definitely sure, if your DL380g4 is the base model, you will defintely need the SCSI Configuration Kit (364471-B21).

Look at the first line under "Internal Storage Option" ftp://ftp.compaq.com/pub/products/servers/proliantdl380/dl380g4-cabling-matrix.pdf
