DL 380 G4 SAS Controller for external tape

Hi there,

we have a DL 380 G4 SCSI model and need to connect the SAS 1 U Rackmount Kit to it. What solutions do I have?
At the moment I'm thinking about installing this card from LSI (http://www.lsi.com/storage_home/products_home/host_bus_adapters/sas_hbas/external/sas3801e/index.html).

Or, second option would be to deinstall the riser card and install the PCIe riser card (HP PCI Express - riser card ( 354675-B21 )).

What would you prefer? Or anybody any other idea?

Thanks in advance,

Marcu

Re: DL 380 G4 SAS Controller for external tape

HI Marcus,

check the tape drive compatibility matrix to know which sas tape drive is supported
http://www.hp.com/products1/storage/compatibility/tapebackup/ISS/Detail/16-0065-0059.html

1U SAS Rack-mount Kit is supported with the following controller
416096-B21 - HP SC44Ge Host Bus Adapter

so I would suggest to add 354675-B21 riser and use 416096-B21 host adapter to avoid any compatibility issue.

thanks,
Aftab

Re: DL 380 G4 SAS Controller for external tape

Best scenerio is tape drive inside the server. Anything in a server is covered under a Carepaq including tape drives. If you buy a four drive external storage device for tape drives, you need separate Carepaqs for each tape drive. I would get a ML3xx series server for your tape drives and backup software. Backup through the network.
