DL 580G2 upgrade

We have a DL580 G1 dual 800 mhz with (2) 36 Gig drives (mirrored). Just purchased a DL 580 G2 with dual 1.X MHZ and (2) 36 Gig Drives. I want to upgrade the DL580 to the faster processor. I wanted to just remove a drive from the DL580 and put in the DL580 G2 boot and be running with the new server. I was told they have different SCSI controllers and this will not work. Can I just swap CPU chips and make the DL580 a 1.X MHZ? Or start over with software/drivers/options in the new server. Any other suggestion on easy way to upgrade the DL580 (production server) to the faster DL580 G2 (not yet in production)
thanks for any thoughts and advice !

Re: DL 580G2 upgrade

In the first instance, create a backup of your data. I would then ensure that the g2 has been erased (erase diskette available from web). Move the drives into the other server - array controller should see valid data in array

Check RBSU (sys config) and reboot - if the controller has found the logical drive you should be ok

Re: DL 580G2 upgrade

It all depends if your DL580/DL580-G2 has a built-in SA RAID controller, but probably it has. It also depends on the OS
What you can do is the following:
- take a full backup of the 'old' DL580
- shut down your DL580
- remove one drive out of the mirror
- insert it into the DL580-G2 and start the server
- press 'F8' to enter the Array setup (not F8 for the iLO)
- make sure that the drive is recognized, it'll probably give some errors that the R1 is broken but press F1 to ignore
- hopefully your OS will load and starts it's PnP process if it's W2K/W2K3

If it doesn't, simply start your old DL580, press F1 to ingore the missing disk and insert the removed drive after some minutes.

Good luck, Gert.

Re: DL 580G2 upgrade

I'll give this a shot
tech support said this would not work
the G1 has a Integrated Smart Array Controller Embedded, the 580 G2 has a Smart Array 5i controller, Embedded
W2k

thanks All !!

Re: DL 580G2 upgrade

well, I'm getting much closer but now I get a blue screen and "Inaccessible_Boot_Disk"

I assume I might be able to reinstall 2K with the repair option?

Or any other suggestions?
thank you !

Re: DL 580G2 upgrade

This might work if you add the driver for the other Smart RAID controller.

4200 / Integrated Smart uses cpqarry2.sys
5300 / Smart 5i uses cpqcissm.sys

Re: DL 580G2 upgrade

The driver installation program for Smart 5x controllers does a hardware check and will not install the driver if no Smart 5x controller is there. But you can extract the driver and then install it using Windows Add Hardware function.

The driver is on the SmartStart CD. You can also download it from the HP web site.

Re: DL 580G2 upgrade

I can not boot the server to change the driver.
can 2k be rebuilt to use a different SCSI driver, without loosing data ?
thanks !!

Re: DL 580G2 upgrade

I think this procedure should work:

1. get driver for Smart 5x controllers
2. unpack driver
3. use 'add hardware' wizard to install it
4. shut down server
5. put drives in new server
6. if everything works ok remove old Smart 4.x driver
