DL140G3 and Penryn

Although the E54xx series are not "supported", is there anything (or has anybody tried) to stop this chip from working (I like the 12Mb L2 cache). According to intel the 5000X chipset supports penryn
cheers

Re: DL140G3 and Penryn

Hi,

I haven't tried it, but that the chipset supports the CPU, doesn't mean that the Server "supports" it.
This server isn't retired now, so there can be a new system ROM that contains the microcode for the 54xx CPU's(e.g. Version: 1.14 (2007.08.13)(17 Aug 2007) adds support for some newer Xeon 53xx models)...
With the CPUs the story with the "supported" is a little bit different, because like you know they are more important than all other components, if the BIOS is not modified, they CAN'T function at all ...

Regards,
Pac
