DL180 G9 Fan Noise with inserted PCIe Card
Hello,
I have big troubles with the fans turning at 70%.
The server is a DL180 Serial Number CZ3519XELF (and i have eleven more of them)
OS: CentOS 6.5
Inserted Cards:
PCI-E Slot 1 - TERMA Voice Announcer Card
PCI-E Slot 2 - HP Smart Array P440 Controller
PCI-E Slot 3 - HP Ethernet 1Gb 4-port 331T Adapter
PCI-E Slot 5 - Moxa RS 232 Card CP-102E
PCI-E Slot 6 - DeLock Parallel Port Card 89219
When i run the Server without any inserted PCIe Card (except the P440 ) the fans are silent after the start of the OS and running at 10%
When i insert the 1Gb 4-port 331T Adapter the fans are turning at 70% load. So i did a SPP Uprade (Version spp_2015.06.0) so i now System ROM U20 v1.40 (05/06/2015) iLO Firmware Version 2.20 May 20 2015. Since that the fans are also silent (10%) with this card inserted.
After inserting one of the other cards or all off them the fans are turning at 70% and they are making a lot of noise.
None of the cards needs a lot of power and i have the same configuration running in two DL360e G8 without that problem.
What should i do to make the fans running at 10%
Thanks, Best regards
Martin

Re: DL180 G9 Fan Noise with inserted PCIe Card
Hi,
There is an Advisory released about Fan noise in DL180 Gen9, please check.

Re: DL180 G9 Fan Noise with inserted PCIe Card
Hi,
This does not help.
The latest SPP is installed
- The driver or firmware may be outdated or may be uninstalled
If i start inteligent provisioning with PCI-E Slot 2 - HP Smart Array P440 Controller the FANS are idle. If I insert PCI-E Slot 3 - HP Ethernet 1Gb 4-port 331T Adapter and start inteligent provisioning the fans turning at 70%
- The Hard Drive is running in AHCI or Legacy mode
Just tried both UEFI and Legacy Mode, Same Result
In the final system I have to use Legacy mode to install CentOS 6.5
- Certain third-party PCI cards are installed
No not at the momemnt only:
PCI-E Slot 2 - HP Smart Array P440 Controller
PCI-E Slot 3 - HP Ethernet 1Gb 4-port 331T Adapter
- No storage drive installed
No, 2 HDDs installed
I dont know but it seems it is not reading the Temperature of PCI-E Slot 3 - HP Ethernet 1Gb 4-port 331T Adapter (and any other cards i have to use.
Any other suggestions.
Thanks, Martin

When in Legacy BIOS the B140i is disabled and put into AHCI mode. When in AHCI mode iLO cannot monitor temperatures of the hard drives and automatically ramps up the fans. CentOS 6.5 should work if the system is configured for UEFI. Some of the NIC cards have an additional driver that gets loaded from the SPP so iLO can access the NIC temp sensor.
If you enable the B140i and load the DUD for 'hpdsa' iLO will be able to monitor the drive temps. The DUD is available here:

Re: DL180 G9 Fan Noise with inserted PCIe Card
The Hard Drives are connected to the HP Smart Array P440 Controller.
I don't have a problem with the drive sensor or the NIC anymore since the SPP Update.
System config that works:
CentOS 6.5 with Legacy BIOS
PCI-E Slot 2 - HP Smart Array P440 Controller
PCI-E Slot 3 - HP Ethernet 1Gb 4-port 331T Adapter
In that configuration everthing is fine and the fans are running at 10% in CentOS.
If i put a additional Card in it it runs again at 70%. And i Need the other cards for the system.
PCI-E Slot 1 - TERMA Voice Announcer Card
PCI-E Slot 5 - Moxa RS 232 Card CP-102E
PCI-E Slot 6 - DeLock Parallel Port Card 89219
So for that case i need a solution.
