DL320 G4 OS installation

Hi!
I'm fighting with the same problem like already discussed here: installation of W2K3 on DL320 G4 with SATA controller.
@1: I gave up configuring RAID1 and disabled the SATA controller in RBSU, but SmartStart installation still doesn't work (no supported controller)
@2: in RBSU I cannot change the Boot Controller Order (SATA is always the first, I cannot choose)
@3: I bought the server without Floppy Drive. IF I need to make a manual installation: do I need the floppy drive for the SATA driver? Windows requests the different controller driver in A:.
@4: If I do configure Raid1 I cannot create drives in the SATA Array Configuration Utility.

I always counted on HP ProLiant servers but this desaster now with simply installing Windows server on the machine... Unbelievable!!!

Re: DL320 G4 OS installation

Hi Michaela,

1. Smart Start CD does not detect the SATA onboard controller.

2. Has the server has only SATA controller, by default that is the one listed first in Boot controller Order.

3. You may need to use a USB FDD to supply the SATA controller driver for windows.

4. Select Raid 1 in the SATA Array confifuration utility, during the Windows installation you could specify or Create a Partition size that you require. Later using Disk Management or HP SATA RAID Controller Manager for Windows 2000/Windows Server 2003 to creating more partition or managing the array.

Re: DL320 G4 OS installation

Hi,

thanks for the fast response.

The server has next to the SATA controller also the "normal" PCI IDE controller. But this is probably not to chose...

Now I'll try the normal windows installation.

Re: DL320 G4 OS installation

Hi Michaela:

1- DL320 G4 with embedded sata raid is not supported in the smartstart cd. You will need to perform manual install. Floppy option required to load drivers. With Manual install you can use raid if you want.

2- don't need to change the boot controller unless you are using a different pci controller as boot controller. for now just keep it the same.

3- You will need the floppy for the F6 and driver for the SATA controller. (can use USB floppy drive or usb key.

4- Once you configure Raid ; just do manual install; Smartstart dosenot work this server in detected the embedded controller.

-

- if you donâ t have the floppy you can use a usb key with the F6 option in windows.

Re: DL320 G4 OS installation

Hi again,

now I'm the happy owner of an internal HP floppy disk drive and tried the manual installation.
BUT: after feeding W2K3 installation with the embedded S-ATA drivers the following error occurs:
File txtsetup.oem caused an unexpected error (1024) at line 1814 in d:\srv03trm\base\boot\setup\oemdisk.c
Whats this again?

Re: DL320 G4 OS installation

Hi Michaela,

To resolve the issue, please format the floppy again and than extract or copy the files onto the floppy and than try loading the drivers. That should resolve the issue.

Raj.

Re: DL320 G4 OS installation

Hi,

Did you try this:
Insert the diskette into a machine with an existing Windows operating system installed.
- Go to the command prompt.START-RUN-CMD-OK- At the prompt, type DIR A:
- If the Volume Serial number is 0000-0000. the diskette is still in it's formatted state from the diskette manufacturer. It may be the cause of this error. Re-format the diskette and copy over the driver files again.

Re: DL320 G4 OS installation

Hi!

The floppy disk number ist definitely different from the factory default. Moreover I tried it with a second one.
But - the errors remains the same.

Re: DL320 G4 OS installation

Hello Michaela,

1.HP recommended floppy drives work with some struggle.
2.The only easy way to get this working is slipstream Service Pack and Raid drivers.

Additional information:

http://www.maximumpc.com/2005/01/how_to_slipstre.html
Though its for Xp,same steps for Win2k/2k3 will work.
http://www.nliteos.com/guide/

Most of the forum guys have had success with this method.

Re: DL320 G4 OS installation

Hi again,

slipstream installation worked with disabled embedded sata controller.
After enabling the controller and configuring it as RAID1 W2K3 startup picture appears for half a second and the server boots again.
What can I do now?

Thanks again!

Re: DL320 G4 OS installation

The main purpose of slipstreaming is to provide sata drivers while installation.
Not sure why you disabled the controller.
Also in the BIOS ensure that SATA option is set to RAID.

Re: DL320 G4 OS installation

I was wrong with the description. Controller WAS enabled. I hadn't enabled advance RAID support in Bios after OS installation. After doing so the loop occured.
Now I tried to install OS again with both enabled SATA controller and RAID1 configured but after going into graphic mode a STOP error 0x00000007B occurs.

Re: DL320 G4 OS installation

Is this the sequence you have tried?

1.SATA Raid enabled in BIOS
2.Slipstreamed SP1 and raid drivers into base Os Cd.
3.Configured array in the sata bios and the logical volume is seen.
4.While booting off the slipstreamed cd,do you get the stop code?

Re: DL320 G4 OS installation

Here's a thought...How about the SmartStart guru's in our development side actually add the support for the embedded SATA controller so that our customers can use the SmartStart application that is shipped with the DL320 G4??? Just an idea.. I have a customer that ordered a dozen DL320 G4 without the floppy add-on and cannot use the SmartStart CD due the the unrecognized controller. We ended up using iLO with a virtual floppy to install W2K3 manually. I just feel that if HP is going to ship units with embedded hardware then the software configurations tools shipped with these should support them.

Re: DL320 G4 OS installation

After having spent working time at least in the value of the server I decided now to use Windows software-based mirroring!

Good luck for all the other fighters with this problem!!!

Re: DL320 G4 OS installation

Were you successful or in progress?
Btw if its the onboard sata controller, its a software raid implementation though you configure the array in the controller bios.

Re: DL320 G4 OS installation

Mirroring has worked, redundancy with the 2 hot-plug HDDs is also working.
Case closed for me.
