DL320S ,can I create raid 5 with 12 Harddisk

For Proliant dl320s ,can I create 1 array of raid 5 with 12 sata Harddisk(all harddisks) many thanks in advance.

for sure, it depends on the controller you're using for your external storage.

But be sure its not the best soltuion to create an array about 12HDDs without an hotspare!

Additional the rebuilt process takes a lot of time!!

May a smaller Array or an Raid ADG/Raid6 is an option for u.

many thanks Michael ,I found that dl320s use controller Smart array P400 but not sure for detail "Eight (8) SAS physical links distributed across 2 internal x4 wide port connectors."

please check the P400 Controller&Sever Specs:

Hi Nonth99,

You sure can create a logical RAID5 set but with 12 disks you are more likely to encounter disk failures. A hot spare would be ideal in your raid5 set (so 11 disks + 1).

I personally would not use RAID ADG because it'd run like a 3-leg-donkey! Unless you are using it to archive files, or need to be able to afford two disks failure at a time.

many thanks guys , one thing about 1 card of P400 I know that it can support 8 harddisk, right? but 12 harddisks on DL320s we must use 2 card of P400 ,how possible to set 1 array raid5 on these 2 controller.

I think it is essentially handled by the midplane over the two connections.
