I have a few concerns after studying the HP doc on swapping processors.
1) The DL360 G3 support docs I've reviewed don't mention the 3.2 GHz CPUs as an option. Other docs just say that the G3 supports 2.4+ GHz 533 FSB CPUs. Will the DL360 G3 support these 3.2 GHz CPUs?
2) The docs insisted that I use new heatsinks since new thermal transfer material is supplied on them. I'm experienced in CPU replacement procedures - why can't I just reuse my existing heatsinks after cleaning them and replacing the thermal transfer compound myself? Is there something here that I'm missing?
3) Will my existing VRMs work ok with the replacement 3.2 GHz CPUs?
Thanks,
Ed

Solutionaccording with quickspecs
3.2 can work
Intel Xeon 3.2GHz/533MHz-2MB Processor Option Kit
353831-B21
Intel Xeon Processor X3.2 GHz-1MB/533MHz Processor Option Kit
345103-B21
source:

and what you can do is order new thermal grease instead of new heatsink
thermal grease used by HP - 395532-001
and yes PPM or VRM will work OK
bye

Re: DL360 G3 Processor Upgrade
However, it turns out that this part number is for a thermal kit (heatsinks with thermal grease already applied) and it would cost me $46 plus shipping, minimum, for two.
HP doesn't have any part numbers listed for thermal grease only for this CPU and heatsink combination. They just want to sell complete kits.
I googled "HP thermal grease" and found this:
http://tinyurl.com/cu8rcv
This is "NEW OEM HP Thermal Grease Kit PF2423BHS001 6043B002040" which is just a tube of grease only for $6.98.
Should I use this or something like Arctic Silver?

Re: DL360 G3 Processor Upgrade
At this point I would use any thermal paste I had. You are replacing HP parts with used/spare parts and I'm assuming this will void the warranty. In my opinion, there is no sense in getting HP thermal paste over the past you have.

Re: DL360 G3 Processor Upgrade
Thanks for your response. The server is definitely OUT OF WARRANTY already so no worries there! Good to know that there's nothing really that special about the HP variety of thermal paste.
