DL360 G3 fan lead extensions

I'm in the process of running up a DL360 G3 on WS2003, and have struck what appears to be the traditional fan noise issue. I've been through all of the steps in the HP advisories except for fitting the fan lead extenders, which may help as the unit has the Nidec fans. I have only a single DL360 G3, so I'm disinclined to purchase a box of 70 extenders (361860-001 - 10 servers worth), and this seems to be the only way they are sold.

The photos in the installation document show the construction of the leads to be fairly simple if I knew the resistor value that these leads put inline. Has anyone details on this?

I'd also be very interested in an opinion as to how much difference the extenders really make to the noise from Nidec fan equipped DL360 G3s? Is it worth the effort?

Re: DL360 G3 fan lead extensions

Another related question. What other brand/model of fans are used in these servers, and is there a noticeable sound difference?
