DL360 G5, PCI-X with Smart Array 6402/128 - Smart Array Error

Hi All,

I'm trying to get a Smart Array 6402/128MB PCI-X Card working in my DL360 G5.

I've purchased and installed the PCI-X Riser, installed the Smart Array 6402 but when the card is initialising during POST, I get the following error: Drive Array Controller Failure. Command Failure (cmd=11h, err=020h, dlu=082:0h)

Anyone know what the problem is?

The SA 6402 works in a different server (ML 150).

hi,

That's a typical controller error. In the most cases is the controller or the cache or the slot defective. Please check, if the controller has the latest FW version . What do you want to connect to this controller?

Hey, how do I test to determine if the Cache or the Slot is defective? The Controller doesn't currently have the latest version of FW, I've struggled with this because every version of Smart Start and Offline Configuration utilities haven't worked properly. I'm connecting an external MSA20.

You mention, that the controller works fine in another server - that means that the issue is with the slot or with the FW.

Please install the controller in the other server and update the controller FW.

About  the cache - hmmm, i'm not sure , if  the controller can work w/o cache , but you can remove it - just for test.

And please be sure, that the BIOS of the server is up to date.

It definitely is a controller failure, I would not advise to use the cache of this controller into another controller , reason being whenever their is a controller failure, it will likely be a cache corrupting the controller or the other way around , If the controller is already working on a diff server I would say it is a cache failure on the controller.

Well, I've purchased another Smart Array Controller (6402) and i'm still getting the same initialisation error.

Even though it was brand new from the static bag, could this be a case of a bad PCI-X riser or something more serious with the system board?

All other functions of the server seem to be ok.

Are there any BIOS settings that need to be enabled for the controller to function properly?

Can you clarify what you mean by enabling the correct controller in RBSU?

The controller is visible in BIOS, I can see it in the PCI devices and I can see it attempt to initialise during POST, but the controller always fails.

I have even tried a 3rd controller (SA 642) and it's also giving the controller initialize error.

I don't understand why this **bleep** thing won't work.

hi,

It seems, that you have an issue with the riser or with the systemboard.

Have you tried w/o to connect the scsi cable to  the controller?
