DL360 g4 - 4GB showing up as 3.5GB - /PAE

I have a DL360 g4 server with 4GB of ram. The OS is only showing 3.5gb. I found a posting on the forums here that explains why this is happening because of the PCI memory area, and how it can be over ridden with the /PAE switch.

However it doesn't recomend doing this because of the 'Performance hit'. What exactly is this performance hit? Is there any case in which the extra 512mb of ram would be worth this performance hit?

Hi, check this link:

Por que hacerlo dificil si es posible hacerlo facil? - Why do it the hard way, when you can do it the easy way?

Thanks for the reply. That's the article I referenced in the original post. My question is more along the lines of where is the performance hit. Is it in memory access time, in cpu cycles, etc. If I have an app that is memory intensive rather than cpu intensive, would it then be better to use the /PAE switch and reclaim the lost 512MB or ram?

Luis, see this thread

I think best solution - use windows 2003 x64 edition (and I think your DL360 G4 support x64)
Note that windows 2003 sp1 automatically enable PAE swich for CPU with hardware DEP support.
