DL360 g4 with SmartArray 6402 has problems installing with RH EL4

I am running a few servers which serve images via the web (currently 5.3 millions pictures of cars). We changed the structure how to the images are distributed across the file system (to be able to split this into several filesystems) and ran into problems with performance under RH EL3.

On another server (DL360 g3 with FCA2214 card) upgrading to EL4 brought the filesystem performance back to acceptable levels. So I went and tried to upgrade on of the DL360 g4 with 6402 controller and it fails because EL4 sees the 6402 as the primary controller. Anyone have hints/clues how to tell EL4 that the internal controller (6i) is the boot controller?

The 6i is set as that, EL3 sees the 6i as c0, the 6402 as c1. But EL4 sees it the other way around.

Looks something to do with the grub.conf

Exact issue:

Nope. This system I tried it on has EL3 installed. It boots of the 6i (mirror of internal 36GB disks). But EL4 install/upgrade sees the 6i as second controller (root = c1d0p6) yet it also sees the fstab on that file system (which has root set as c0d0p6 as it works under EL3).

This is where EL4 gets confused and can't continue.
