For future reference, the scripting toolkit is a self contained bootable image. It includes scripts to create a bootable USB  key and ISO image. There is a version of the toolkit tools in RPM format for those wanting to just use a subset of the tools on a normal OS.   The SPP and other HPE tools are based on the toolkit kernel so you don't need the SPP in debug mode to access a shell, just boot into the toolkit

Ok, I updated the guide. 

Do you have some instructions on how to use the toolkit to do what I had to do? The scripting guide pdf is a little overwhelming.

Oh, and Jimmy Vance: any idea why my mouse wouldn't work with Intelligent Provisioning v1.7, but it would work with v1.63?

Well, this was a try for curiosity.

You need putty to connect to the ILO and an external http (web) server, I used usbwebserver -www.usbwebserver.net

Put the ILO-2.55.bin firmware file on this web server and connect via ssh to the ILO.

Then do

</>hpiLO-> load /map1/firmware1 -source http://10.0.0.10/ILO/ilo4_255.bin

Resetting iLO.

This takes around 10 minutes, you don't see any progress. After the update ILO reboots and the new version is running.
