DL365: CPU Upgrade?

I have a half-dozen DL365's (Performance Model, 411361-001) with two dual-core, 2.8GHz Second Generation Opteron CPU's. Can these CPU's be upgraded to a quad-core CPU?

Yes, you can upgrade to these 2300-series processors which are Quad-core

 

AMD Opteron™ Processor 2356 (2.3 GHz, 75 Watts) FIO 447600-B21

AMD Opteron™ Processor 2354 (2.2 GHz, 75 Watts) FIO 447602-B21

AMD Opteron™ Processor 2352 (2.1 GHz, 75 Watts) FIO 447604-B21

AMD Opteron™ Processor 2346HE (1.8 GHz, 55 Watts) FIO 457239-B21

 

Make sure before you remove your current processors that your firmware and operating system software are fully updated to current to ensure best chance of newer processors functioning properly.  (Old firmware may be unstable or completely non-operational with newer processors)

BTW: Will any of the six-core or eight-core Opterons work in these servers? e.g., Except for the stepping, the 2400-series "Istanbul" CPU appears to fit the bill: Both are K10-based, Socket F, Third Generation Opterons.

 

I'm sure that there's more to it that this, however.

No, the 2356 is the highest processor listed as compatible with this system.

It's really unfortunate that HP discontinued the DL365 and the only rackmount options are now the 2U DL385 and 4U DL585 in Gen8. The newer AMD processors in Gen8 are up to 16-core - so in 4U worth of space with these models you can get up to 64 cores.

Depending on what you're using the servers for, if you're in the market to upgrade your server farm & if core density is your goal, I highly recommend using BL465c or BL685c blades. In a c7000 chassis, you can get 512 cores (16 BL465c or 8 BL685c servers, 32 total 16-core procs! In 10U of rack space!). Pretty amazing stuff, it's a shame AMD hasn't found as widespread of adoption as you'd think it would with the technology being so awesome.

Yikes! The Product Description page for the DL385 has this to say:

 

THIS PRODUCT HAS BEEN IDENTIFIED AS A HIGH RISK MODEL FOR NO FAULT FOUND WITH HARD DRIVES AND MEMORY MODULES. PARTS MUST NOT BE ORDERED WITHOUT DOING APPROPRIATE DIAGNOSIS! SEE THE ORDERING LINKS BELOW.

 

The HP ProLiant DL385 Server Worldwide QuickSpecs page only lists single-core and dual-core options:

 

Processors:

  • SCSI Models:
    • Up to two AMD Opteron processors model 285 (2.6 GHz Dual-core), 280 (2.4 GHz Dual-core), 275 (2.2 GHz Dual-core), 270 (2.0 GHz Dual-core), 265 (1.8 GHz Dual-core), 254 (2.8 GHz Single-core), 252 (2.6 GHz Single-core) and 250 (2.4 GHz Single-core) with 1MB L2 cache per core
  • SAS Models:
    • Up to two AMD Opteron processors model 285 (2.6 GHz Dual-core), 280 (2.4 GHz Dual-core), 275 (2.2 GHz Dual-core) and 265 (1.8 GHz Dual-core) with 1MB L2 cache per core

Would the 16-core CPU's be an upgrade?

I'm sorry, I was referring to the DL385p Gen8. You have the original DL385 "G1" pages.

I'm not sure what that note on the product description page means (it's not worded very clearly - I'm assuming they mean that simply that they get back a lot of "defective" parts after repairs that actually aren't defective, hence why they request appropriate diagnosis).

Oops - I think that I must've used Google to find the Overview page for the DL385 G1!

 

When I navigated from the HP homepage, I found the Overview page for the DL385 G8 here. (FWIW: That's an impressive piece of equipment! For the time being, however -- being a small startup -- I'll have to get by with the DL365 G1 servers.)
