DL380 G1: Poor CD-RW performance...stuck in PIO mode

I put a BTC 48x CD-RW in my DL380 but am getting very poor performance. Attempting to burn a CD at anything over 24X actually takes longer than at 24X (for example RH 9 CD2 5:35@32X, RH 9 CD1 6:05@48X, RH 9 CD3 4:17@24X). The built-in CD and the added CDRW are using PIO mode. I've set the driver to "use DMA if available", but apparently its not available...both drives stuck in PIO. I disconnected the original slim-line CD to no effect. Am I toast like some CDs?

I'm not sure if you're "toast", but the IDE controller is capable of anything better than PIO mode in the DL380.
The truth is out there, but I forgot the URL..
