DL380 G2 Remove Smart Array 5i

I have a need to remove the smart array 5i controller in order for the OS to see each individual SCSI disk.

What I've done so far:

1) Installed two 36GB SCSI U3 SCSI drives

2) Removed the Smart Array 5i daughter card

3) Set the motherboard SCSI interlock switch #1 from Off to On

4) Reseated backplane power and SCSI cable several times

When I turn on the server there is nothing in the POST indicating that an internal SCSI controller is present. When I run a Smart Start CD it keeps looping because it says that no physical or logical drives were detected on the primary controller.

I'm pulling my hair out on this one - what do I need to do?

Hi Ken!

you need to change the boot controller in Setup.

Ken:

Why not create 2 Arrays of 1 drive each? Keeping in place the Smart Array for better performance?

Also, why do you want the OS to see each individual disk?

Re: DL380 G2 Remove Smart Array 5i

Apparently these servers don't have built in SCSI controllers separate from the array controller. After installing an external SCSI card I was off to the races.

I need the OS to see the drives individually because I'm using the server to do some data recovery.
