DL380/G3 Disk I/O Performance

I have 2 DL380/G3 Servers both with 6gb RAM, 641 Controller with 128mb BB Cache, 4 72gb 15k U320 Drives configured as 2 mirrored drives. I am running Windows 2000 Advanced server w/SP4, Terminal Services for admin only and MS SQL Server 2000 SP3.

I am using the /PAE switch in boot.ini.

My problem is the machine will drop to it's knees and crawl anytime that I try to delete a file on either drive that is more than 500K in size. It will sometimes lock if I simply highlight a large file in explorer.

The machine has been rebuilt from the ground up several times. The drives have been replaced and as so the 641. The performance is sooooo bad that other applications on DL360's that use queue folders on the DL380's will timeout because of access latency.

Any ideas on this one?

Maybe too obvious - but you don't have a virus checker running in the background do you? They can really kill machines, if they try and background scan a selected file.
