Hi Harry,
Earlier today I updated the firmware and OS drivers of the sa5i controller & reinstalled with fingers crossed. Alas, same result. But then I read your suggestion and eventually managed to find the Microsoft CD with W2K & SP4, reinstalled with this CD and... hey presto! All is how it should have been on Monday!!! Ironically it was the version we wanted anyway, but couldn't locate at the time. Sincere thanks for this, and for all the other contributions.
