DL380 G3 Ram Upgrade

Hello,

I am upgrading the RAM in my DL380 Server running Win 2003 Ent. It previously had 3GB of ram which I have removed. I am installing 8GB 4x2GB of Kingston RAM (P/N: 300682-B21). When I install the DIMMS and power the server back on I get one long beep and the Internal Health light turns on. I tried just installing 4GB and it works fine. I have the /PAE swithch in the boot.ini file, but with 8GB in it does not get that far.
If anyone has any ideas it would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

Re: DL380 G3 Ram Upgrade

Here's a quick note on the memory kit you referenced. Maybe this is your problem:

NOTE: The 4096MB of Advanced ECC PC2100 DDR Memory kit (300682-B21) can only be used in 2.8GHz/533/1MB and 3.06GHz and faster models.

Thanks for the response,

I did check that before the upgrade, my server currently has 2 3.2ghz Xeon processors.

Re: DL380 G3 Ram Upgrade

The 2.4 and 2.8Ghz proc models support 1024MB DIMMs only for a max memory of 6144MB according to my docs.

The 2GB DIMMs will only work in the 3.06Ghz models for a max of 12288MB if fully populated.

If you have the 3.06Ghz model try updating the BIOS perhaps.

Re: DL380 G3 Ram Upgrade

Hi Matthew,

I already tried upgrading the Bios, and that did not fix the problem. I am really puzzled by this one.

Thanks

Re: DL380 G3 Ram Upgrade

What slots do you have the memory in? Have you tried putting the 2GB modules in 3B 4B 5C 6C? What about 1A 2A 3B 4B? That's all I can think of right now, you might have to log a trouble call for this.

Re: DL380 G3 Ram Upgrade

Good luck with HP technical support if non-HP memory is installed. It always killed me to pay for their "qualified" memory, but when I had heard that they might respond to a call by asking you to pull the memory and see if your problem persists, I just bit the bullet and used the recommended memory.

When you only have 4GB installed are they in 1A and 2A or do you use other banks?
