DL380 G3 don't recognize Ultrium 448

Hello,

I've got a tricky problem:

We've got a DL380 G3, which we want to connect
to a HP Ultrium 448 (Part.No. DW017A). The
integrated Smartarray 5i HBA don't recognize
the tape-drive, so linux don't recognize the
drive too.

If I put the drive to a G4 (Smartarray 6i), it
will be recognized as a tape drive.
If I first put a HP DAT40 to the G3, then boot
into Linux, then attach the Ultrium 448 drive,
it will work too.

What can I do, to get the G3 to recognize
the Ultrium2?

Thanks in advance.

So long,
Andre

Re: DL380 G3 don't recognize Ultrium 448

you can try to verify firmware 2.62 5i

Hello,

The integrated 5i is already on 2.62. :-(

In the moment I don't have a spare SCSI-HBA
to put in the G3, but when there is no chance
to go with the 448 I must get one, or try to
change the 448 to an Ultrium 460, which will
work (as I tried one from our other server).

Thanks.

Re: DL380 G3 don't recognize Ultrium 448

The Ultrium 448 drive is not supported on the 5i controller, but is supported on the 6i. This is in line with what you have observed. You will need to purchase a supported SCSI HBA if you want to connect the Ultrium 448 to the DL380 G3.

The best place to check this sort of info is
http://www.hp.com/go/connect

Unfortunately the table only includes current model Proliants.

Re: DL380 G3 don't recognize Ultrium 448

Hi Andre

HP Ultrium 448 is not supported on 5i controller. It is recommended to have a seperate SCSI card on DL380 G3 for tape drive connectivity. As a matter of fact tape drives should not share SCSI channels with hard disks on account of difference in IO band width performance

Re: DL380 G3 don't recognize Ultrium 448

Hi,

thanks for the answers,
so either I will swap all the disks in our G3
with the disks in the G4 to use the 448 on a
proliant, or I will put the drive on our
Itanium-Server and get the (there attached)
Ultrium 460 on the G3...

Maybe there will be a Firmware-Update for the
5i in future, where this 448 is supported at
boot time.

Another way is to boot with DAT40, then change to Ultrium 448 at runtime, and never reboot again :-)

Now I've swapped the 448 with the 460 from
our Itanium Server, and now both servers
are happy ;-)
