DL380 G3 - replacing hard drives

I have a question about my Proliant DL380 G3 with a HP SmartArray 5i controller. Currently, I have 6 - 146.8gb 10K SCSI drives installed in it. I was looking at replacing them with 300gb drives.

In the past with other servers, I have been able to replace them one by one by pulling one out, putting the new drive in and letting the drive rebuild itself. Once it completed, put the next one in and so on. When all drives were replaced, I was able to use the added space and create a new logical drive.

I just want verification that I can do this with this server.

Thanks.

Yes, you can - assuming you have RAID 5 (or 10) in place! :-)

What I see as a downside of your approach, however, is the fact that it could be very lengthy process.

I would only do that if the system cannot be put off-line (the rebuilding process will impact the performance badly though).

Otherwise less hassle would be with backing up old drives (which you should do anyway), replacing them with new ones, creating as large logical drive as you wish & restoring from backup.

Rgds.
