When I add a LSI20320C-HP SCSI card to the above server it fails to boot up when I power it back on. I tried all 3 PCI slots and get the same behavior. If I take it out of the server boots up fine.

Any ideas why this is happening.

You need to set the boot order / controller order in the bios / RBSU.

The server already has onboard Smart Array 6i controller which is configured to RAID5. How come i need to change in the RBSU as i'm only using this SCSI card so i can connect a Quantum Superloader 3 for tape backups.

Check the IPL Device List - Standard Boot Order in the bios (Press F9) Select Advanced Options

Check if the card is detected in the server’s ROM-Based Setup Utility (RBSU) under PCI devices menu. If so, then check it is reflected in the Boot Controller Order and is set as the first boot device in the Standard Boot Order (IPL). If not so set in the latter, please set so to make the server boot from the controller.

Next would be to enter the controller’s BIOS during the server POST prompt and check if the hard drives connected to the controller is detected and are configured into an array and that operating system has been installed. If the controller connects to a storage device, then check if the LUN is properly presented to the server to boot successfully.

Thanks for your reply, the problem i have is that when i put the SCSI card into the riser cage and power the server back on i get no post and no video signal. I end up having to power down the server and take out the card so it boots up OK. The server has 1 array with 1 logical drive configured as a RAID5 with one hot spare (6x146GB) The OS partition is 100GB and i have 464GB Data Partition. The Server is running Win2k8 Std x64 and it was installed using SmartStart 8.50 x64.

Standard Boot Order IPL is currently set as CD-ROM, Hard Drive C:, USB DriveKey C:, Floppy Drive and embedded NIC NC7782

Boot Controller Oder is set to PCI Embedded HP Smart Array 6i Controller and PCI Embedded HP Integrated PCI IDE Controller

PCI Devices are all IRQ5, USB Controller's, HP Integrated Lights Out Controller and Processor, 2x NC7782 Gigabit NIC's and Smart Array 6i Controller.

Does your server have both power supplies installed?  If it does, test that the server will run (i.e., without the SCSI card installed of course) on one power supply.  Remove one while running, then swap.  If the server fails under load, then you have a bad / waek P/S.

The card may be drawing the server power down with a weak power supply?

If you do not have dual P/S, you may be overloading the server and need the extra P/S to handle the load.

Hi, thanks for your reply. The server does have 2 PSU's both connected and working fine. I have tried running with one and the other, then swapped them and used both. They seems to be fine. The server has just has Win2k8 Std x64 installed, no other cards present on the system.

Hmmph.    Have you put the card in another server or workstation to see if the problem travels?

I haven't tried that as yet but it would be worth a try. My BIOS looks OK, i thought you should just be able to add a card in and Windows would recognise and install the drivers. I don't understand why i get no video or POST when i add the card into the server as it's fine with no cards.
