DL380 G5: CPU(s) operating at reduced performance level due to a low power cap.

I happened to see this maintenance message in the Integrated Management Log of a DL380 G5 server (running Novell NetWare 6.5):

"CPU(s) operating at reduced performance level due to a low power cap."

Does anybody know what it means and what should be done about it? No event was generated at the HP SIM CMS server. How do I know if the CPU is running at reduced performance at the moment?

I can't find any relevant information anywhere...

Re: DL380 G5: CPU(s) operating at reduced performance level due to a low power cap.

It is possible that the Power regulator for Proliant has been enabled in System ROM (BIOS). You can use the RBSU (ROM Based Setup Utility) by pressing F9 during server boot.

Navigate to System Options | Power Regulator for Proliant. Select the appropriate setting for your environment.

Reboot the server.

Let me know if it helps.

You can find the processor matrix for info on which processors support the power regulation mode at:

Re: DL380 G5: CPU(s) operating at reduced performance level due to a low power cap.

Thank you very much for taking the time.
I will check the Power Regulator settings in the RBSU within the next week or so. (When I can schedule some downtime for this server).

I looked on the Power Management Settings tab in the iLO2 web interface which states that Power Regulator for ProLiant is in OS Control Mode. (Same option as Disabled in the RBSU setup).
Also Power Capping is Disabled.

Re: DL380 G5: CPU(s) operating at reduced performance level due to a low power cap.

Hi Karlo - thanks for your effort

The iLO firmware is already the latest version (1.35)

I will upgrade the System ROM next weekend.

For what it's worth: The IML-message showed up almost exactly one week after a faulty PSU had been replaced...

I am also seeing this message in the HP ProLiant Integrated Management Log Viewer ├в I do not see it anywhere in the HP System Management Homepage ├в it appears at random, usually twice a month, sometimes once a month. I do not notice/experience any other problems with the server, it keeps on running fine. I have verified input power is a continually a clean 117Vac 60Hz

Server is running...
