DL380 G5 - Upgrade RAID from p400 to p410?

Hi,

Am setting up a DL380 G5 (dual QC 2.66 CPUs, 20GB RAM) to run VMWare 5.0 and was wondering whether it makes to sense (performance wise) to upgrade the standard p400 RAID controller to the newer p410?  Will be using a set of 6-146GB 10K drives in RAID 5 configuration.  Thanks for any insight anybody may have.

Hi,

Its difficult to discuss the performance but you can only compare some basic specs.

P400 is 3Gb/s with 2 internal ports and supports 18 drives.

P410 is 6Gb/s with 2 internal ports and supports 25 drives.

Performance cannot be measured just on the controller , however here you will find more about the differences on p400 vs p410

Re: DL380 G5 - Upgrade RAID from p400 to p410?

Hi,

To echo what was said before - real world performance can't just be measured on spec.

Having said that, I have used both controllers - I find P400 performs very well despite it is an older model. I have done some benchmark testing and found that for smal random IOPS, P400 and P410 performs the same (using 146GB 10k SAS drives). However the P410 performs a lot better on sequential read/writes.

So if you will be shifting lots of large files around I think you could benefit from the P410. Otherwise, the difference will be hard to notice.

Also don't forget to check the compatibility matrix. I think some of the G5 servers don't support P410 generation Smart Arrays.

Regards

I upgraded one of these machine from a p400 to a 410.  Now the lights on the front of the drives are all dark.  so there is no PHSYSICAL way to tell if a drive has issues or not.  any ideas?  tia...
