DL380 G5 VLAN trunking issue on Windows 2008

DL380 G5, NIC: NC 373i
Windows server 2008 Enterprise
NIC Driver: 4.1.3.0 (HP SmartStart CD reports 4.1.5.0 though)
HP network utility: 9.10.0.0

I installed Windows 2008 from scratch. I configured an IP address for the NIC (without any VLAN config). It worked fine. I can ping the default gateway (a router).

Then I used HP Network Utility to configure two VLANs on the NIC: vlan 100 and vlan 999. vlan 100 is the default (native) vlan.

HP network utility created two new network interfaces (vlan100 and vlan999). I configured IP addresses for those two vlan interfaces.

When I tried to ping the gateway(10.88.229.1) in the default vlan 100, I got the message -

"Reply from 10.88.229.195: Destination host unreachable."

10.88.229.195 is the IP configured on vlan 100 interface.

When I pinged the gateway(192.168.2.200) in the other vlan 999. I got reponse just fine.

I'm sure the configuration on the switch is correct, because:
1) I reviewed the switch config and make sure it was configured as a 802.1q trunk and allows vlan 100 and 999.
2) I had a another DL380G4 box with Win2003 and with NIC trunking (vlan 100 and 999). It was working fine on the same switch port.

Screenshot attached.

Thanks!

Re: DL380 G5 VLAN trunking issue on Windows 2008

4.1.5 is the latest version for virtual bus driver, NIC driver is 4.1.3. Both are included on the same package, also includes iSCSI driver 4.1.8

Can you please provide HP Net survey and switch port configuration?

From Command prompt:

hpnetsvy >filename.txt

Re: DL380 G5 VLAN trunking issue on Windows 2008

Look on the configuuration for second vlan, there is no gateway configured.

Name = Local Area Connection 3
Description = HP Network Teaming Virtual Miniport Driver
VLAN Id = 100
VLAN Name = VLAN100
DHCP = Disabled
IP Gateway = 10.88.229.1
IP Address = 10.88.229.195

Name = Local Area Connection4
Description = HP Network Teaming Virtual Miniport Driver #2
VLAN Id = 999
VLAN Name = VLAN999
DHCP = Disabled
IP Address = 192.168.2.195
IP Gateway = 0.0.0.0
IP Address = 192.168.2.195

Same on ipconfig /all

Ethernet adapter Local Area Connection 4:

IPv4 Address. . . : 192.168.2.195(Preferred)

Subnet Mask . . . : 255.255.255.0

Default Gateway . . :

DNS Servers . . . . : 127.0.0.1

I├В┬┤d try assigning the IP for default gateway manually from the local area connection, if it doesnt work then remove the vlan and create it again.

Switch side looks ok.

Re: DL380 G5 VLAN trunking issue on Windows 2008

there's a gateway configured in VLAN 100. The gateway address is 10.88.229.1

there's no gateway in VLAN999. because it's a separated/self-contained VLAN, there's no gateway in this VLAN at all. (in another word, this VLAN should not have any communication to the outside world).

Did you mean I need a gateway for a VLAN even it does not have a gateway?

Thanks!

Re: DL380 G5 VLAN trunking issue on Windows 2008

No, in that case you dont need gateway for vlan 999.

Have you try to ping the vlan 100 gateway without vlan 999 configured?
