DL380 G6 Memory Configuration and Second Processor

A simple question will the second processor show up if no memory modules are installed in CPU2 slots?

For instance if I only have 2 x 2GB RDIMM in CPU1 Slots A and B will the second processor boot?

Thank You

Re: DL380 G6 Memory Configuration and Second Processor

Hi Cadu,
This configuration used to work in AMD and as Intel has copied their design so it should work too.
But if you are going to install two memory modules then You can easily install single RAM with each processor

Re: DL380 G6 Memory Configuration and Second Processor

no it will not each processor needs its banks populated
see page

http://h18000.www1.hp.com/products/quickspecs/13234_div/13234_div.html#Memory

click on tab memory it shows what to do for 2 cpu etc

This is how you thank in the forum

TarunJain

thats what I figured but mark1234├В┬┤s answer confused me.

Mark1234

If you look at the memory guidelines all it mentions is without a second CPU only half of the banks will be available and that to maximize performance you should balance the total memory capacity between all installed processors.

I├В┬┤m asking this question because I have already a server in a remote location (1000 Miles away) configured with 2 Processors and two memory modules in the same CPU.

Re: DL380 G6 Memory Configuration and Second Processor

Hi Cadu,
So you already have a server with same configuration.
What is its status then? Is it working?
I'm sure that you can install single memory with each CPU. Its the recommended configuration by HP.
Check the Online Memory configuration Tool:

Re: DL380 G6 Memory Configuration and Second Processor

I will only find out in a week, since there is nobody there to install it. But if it does not come up I want to know before hand what to do.

I guess if it does not all I will have to do is ask someone to install one module in each CPU bank A/A.

Re: DL380 G6 Memory Configuration and Second Processor

point 1 ""
okay to clarify guys when using 2 processors the ram needs to be balanced on both
processor banks ,for stable performance ,

yet in certin circumstances the server can boot depending on type of ram installed ,
and brands like motorola and hynex etc ,(HP use their brands of memory quite often)
g6 server with one cpu can run with a single dimm if needed for min config testing etc,,feks when testing memory threshold exceeded errors etc..

so for stable performance see point 1 above

one more note if using 2 cpu try to stick with either motorola or hynex do not mix them especially in the same bank be warned

enjoy hope this helps and saves you along journey

Re: DL380 G6 Memory Configuration and Second Processor

to clarify further one cpu can be used but then only the memory in its banks will be available.. hope this clears things up :)

Re: DL380 G6 Memory Configuration and Second Processor

Thank you mark, so it may work but for best practices you need to balance the memory.

And thanks for the tip concerning memory brands.
