DL380 G6 Trying to add 16 GB -already has 8/4 GB- ESX 4.1
We are running ESX and have purchased 16 GB DIMMS to add capacity across 5 servers. All bays are currently populated with a mix of 4 and or 8 GB dimms. I cant see how to add 16's to these boxes without erroring out.
Do I have to run ONLY 16's in a chassis? Is there a Firmware upgrade that will help??
I have a support case but I cant take the down time to pull all the ram onboard to record part numbers right now.

This has a chart to explain how memory is installed.
What do you have in each server now? How much RAM do you need? I would recommend 8 GB because they are less expensive. You can mix RAM sizes. Just use either HP or Axiom RAM.

I have been through this and several other PDF's maybe I am just misunderstanding.
If I use 16GBs AT ALL with ANY other ram, we can only populate 12 slots.
Thats about the only config I haven't tried.

You are correct, with quad rank RAM you can use 12 slots total, 6 per CPU. You would not use banks 1,4,7. You would need both CPUs installed for 192GB.
