DL380 Gen9 ROM update instructions
Hi guys,
I have 1 server, a ProLiant DL380 Gen9, which I use for a small website company. Running ESXi.
I want to prepare updates on it for the firmware, BIOS and anything else I can.
The idea is that I have the most minimum downtime possible.
System ROM is currently: P89 v2.40 (02/17/2017)
Redundant System ROM is: P89 v1.30 (12/24/2014)
Would I be currect in applying the following procedure (Via ILO4)...
- Under diagnostics, Swap rom (so the 2014 is currenly active)
- Under Firmware, upload the latest ROM I can find.
- Shutdown ESXi and reboot the server
Question: Will this delete all my BIOS configuration? Or is the configuration stored elsewhere? I don't know what is on the 2014 ROM or how it is configured and I'm worried it wont be the same settings as the active ROM.
Thanks for any help you can offer.

Re: DL380 Gen9 ROM update instructions
Hi Matt,
the two ROMs are not designed two use them in the way you want.
The Second is mainly a recovery ROM Version if the Primary fails (corrupt).
If you Update the ROM, the actual Version is copied to the second Partition.
It works not like the ROM on the Switches.
And there are a lot more ROMs, like this one (Array Kontroller, NIC, FC, Power Controller, ..)
I would recommend you this way:
1. Update the iLO using the iLO Web Console, this can be done Online
2. Download the current SPP ISO: Service Pack for ProLiant
3. Mount the SPP by using the iLO Mount Media Option
4. Now, boot the Server from this ISO, this will Auto-detect and Update every Firmware
5. Dismount ISO, Finish (reboot)
Updating ROMs will not erase the Configuration.

Re: DL380 Gen9 ROM update instructions
Thanks so much for your reply, much appreciated.
Sadly I don't have access to download the SPP. I only have the last critical system ROM which is a free download.
Is there anywhere I can get the SPP? I bought my server in June 2017 so it should be under warranty
Thanks again
Matt

If your server still has a valid warranty, you should be able to link it to your account and download the SPP

Re: DL380 Gen9 ROM update instructions
Swap to the old BIOS will NOT give you the result you want.
If you update the BIOS, the new bits are always written to the secondary location, the next reboot will than swap active and secondary. This way you always have the previous version at the secondary location until the next BIOS update. Then they will swap again.
Hope this helps!
Regards
Torsten.

Re: DL380 Gen9 ROM update instructions
Thanks guys. Really clear now, so don't swap the ROM first.
Regarding the warranty - it looks like I previously added it to the HP portal thing, probably when I first setup the server 2 years ago. But it says out of warranty. I can't understand how that can be after 2 years when in Europe we have laws protecting us on the sale of electronic goods for 5 years minimum.

Re: DL380 Gen9 ROM update instructions
I'm not exactly sure about the correct english wording, but do not mix up guarantee and warranty..

Re: DL380 Gen9 ROM update instructions
Since you running ESXi ..
It is suggested to refer HPE-VMware recipt to comply with the set of firmware and drivers mentioned in the recipt .
