DL380 Memory Configurations and questions

I ran into a situation last night and have a question.

Right now we have a mix and match of 8 and 4gb 10600r sticks of memory and have 1 slot open per bank......so 2 slots per server.

Long story short we purchased a 16gb kit (2x8) to go into the open slots. Tried it...and it would not boot....nor post.

My guess here is that you cant mix the 16s with the others because the 16s can only go into the server in a certain config (6 per bank for a total of 12 or 192gb). Thus...trying to use these 16gb sticks will not work to upgrade our server along side our 8s and 4s. The best we could do is stick another set of 8gb sticks in the open slots giving us a total of 16gbs of memory that can be added before we need to start replacing the 4gb sticks ...with 8s......or ultimately tear out all memory and replace with the 12 sticks of 16gb memory

Is that correct?

This is is a VMWare host and i wont likely have the $4000+ to upgrade each host to have 12x16gb sticks any time soon :)
