DL380 gen.8 + eSATA / USB 3.0
Hello.
In the past we were successfully using an eSATA controller (SI3132 based) with an external single disk eSATA harddisk enclosure for backups on DL380 G5 / G6 and G7 servers for many customers successfully.
But things seem to have changed.
Today we received our first gen.8 server and found that the controller is not even recognized during boot process.
Any idea why this no longer work.
I know this is not a supported option however this combination worked absolutely reliable for so many customers over the past years that we don't like to try something new, esp. as it has costed endless failed attempts until we found that solution.
Does anybody have a suggestion what to try next?
An USB 3.0 card would also be possible as the drive enclosures we use support this option also.
Thanks for any suggestions.
Cheers.

Re: DL380 gen.8 + eSATA / USB 3.0
Hi
Sorry I am not able to help you, but I would gladly hear about what brand and model you have been using for e-sata in your HP DL380 servers as I have not been lucky yet in finding one that work properly?
Best regards
Benny

Re: DL380 gen.8 + eSATA / USB 3.0
What works flawlessly here with DL380 G6 + G7 is the
Digitus DS-30102 with the non-RAID firmware image.
We are running Windows 2008 R2.
Drive spin down and hotplug also work.
For the G5 we only tried the DL360 which also works,
but you have to choose the right PCIe slot.
We invested a huge amount of time to find out and now
have a bunch of useless partly quite expensive controllers,
so enjoy this information.
Cheers.

Re: DL380 gen.8 + eSATA / USB 3.0
Did you ever find a solution to the eSATA controller not being recognized on the DL380 G8. We are having the exact same issue. The card worked fine on a 380 G5, but is not even seen during boot of the G8. Unfortunately our drive enclosure is eSATA only so we need to find a resolution or switch to a NAS enclosure.
Thanks,
Gordon

Re: DL380 gen.8 + eSATA / USB 3.0
The only solution we found was switching the eSATA controller.
DIGITUS DS-30104 works quite well here on DL380 gen.8 when using the x8 slot (no 3).
However the driver does not support drive spin down.
HTH.
