DL3805G: 2 p400 controllers?

Im looking to build a Win2k8 virtual server.

My setup is the following:
2x 15k 74GB disks in raid 1 (Host)
4x 15k 74GB disks in raid 5 (VM's)

Is there a clear performance improvement when running both arrays on different p400 controllers or should a single p400 controller have no problem working with both arrays?

Our server has by default a p400 256mb BBWC controller.

Any information would be very welcome.

Regards,
Robin

Hi,

There is not need of one more Controller. At the max you could opt for 512MB battery-backed write cache (BBWC). Part number is 411064-B21.

Installing one more card will have minimal improvement of 5 to 10 persent. The Buffered Write speed of all six drives will be around 200 MBps. For two controllers, you can achive 100 + 120 MBps.

Anand, thank you for your answer.

Does this mean that 200MBps is more or less the practical limit to the writing speed of the controller?

Would replacing the raid 5 array for a raid 10 array change the picture a lot? From my understanding of virtualization the host for the MS VM's will not be used a lot for write and read actions. So I expect that the VM's will be responsible for more then 90% of the controllers troughput. I'm close to answering my own question here, but I would really appreciate your input on this scenario.
