DL380G2 - Fans are running at full speed
I purchased a used DL380G2,
and i've installed a new OS (XP Pro)
and the cooling fans are running at full speed all the time...
aren't they supposed to slow down after boot and only kick up under pressure???
please advise
take care

Re: DL380G2 - Fans are running at full speed
Please find quick Specs for Dl380 G2 server, XP pro is not on the supported OS Matrix.
http://h18004.www1.hp.com/products/quickspecs/10902_div/10902_div.html
On all ProLiant DL380 G2 servers, the Systems Management Driver (Health Driver) will control the speed of the fans and adjust the speed as necessary based on the ambient operating air temperature.
Since XP is not a supported Operating System you may not be able to install the Support Pack.
- Install a Supported Operating System
- Update the Firmware Levels on the server, using Firmware Maintenance CD
- Update Proliant Support Pack - Currnetly available- 7.70A
You can find the Support Pack/Firmware Maintenance CD from the below Link.

Re: DL380G2 - Fans are running at full speed
XP Pro is a client OS and not a server OS.
It does'nt make sense including a Client OS in a enterprise segment.
Not supported means not tested.
Also, most of the HP tools may not work.
You may want to install Xp and try the tools/drivers for Win 2k.

Re: DL380G2 - Fans are running at full speed
Try this link
www.hp.com/products/quickspecs
On the Left Go to "WorldWide QuickSpecs"
Then choose the product,
Ex: Proliant Servers > Proliant DL > and then select the Model of the server for the latest QuickSpecs.

Re: DL380G2 - Fans are running at full speed
You can get the fan speed down in XP.
Please see the following reply I made some time ago regarding this.
http://forums1.itrc.hp.com/service/forums/questionanswer.do?threadId=1020010
I hope this helps.

Re: DL380G2 - Fans are running at full speed
Just a note to inform.....
the software had a little
problem installing through the
built in staller - but setting the run as
windows 2000 it allowed it to install
and the fan speed issue has been resolved.
Thanks a million to everyone!!
take care
