DL380G3 Dual RAID
Can I setup a Raid 1 (2 drives) and Raid 5 drive (3 drives) on a Proliant DL380 with just the existing raid controller, or would I need to add a Smart 641 or 642 controller as well.
Also, if I wanted to do the same on a ML370 G3, could I do this with a single Smart Array 642.
Thanks
Bruce

Re: DL380G3 Dual RAID
You sure could. The 5i (comes with the DL380G3) and the 64x series are your entry level raid controllers. Both controllers have 64mb of regular cache memory. the 64x series supports Ultra320 drives, the 5i only supports Ultra3
But with the 64x series, you can add 64mb of Battery-backed write cache, which would speed things up.

Re: DL380G3 Dual RAID
All of the Smart Array controllers can have multiple arrays configured on them. Whether you want to do this on some of lower end controllers may be a different matter. If the raid 5 won't be heavily used, then the 5i or non battery backed cache 641/642 may be fine, but I would normally recommend having the battery backed cache for write operations and to improve performance.
The ML370 G3 would have the same things apply to it as well, except the 5i is not an option for this machine.

The truth is out there, but I forgot the URL..
