DL385 G2 vs G5 max memory

Hi,

when comparing the quick specs of the DL385 G2 and G5, I see absolutly no difference in the Northbridge, Southbridge and CPU components. But why is it stated, that the G2 only support 32GB whereas the G5 support 64GB ?

Also running dmidecode on the G2 tells me: "Maximum Capacity: 64 GB"

Has someone ever tried to install 64GB on the G2 ?

Re: DL385 G2 vs G5 max memory

Hello,

the only difference in DL385 G2 and G5 memory system is that G5 officially supports 8GB DDR2 modules - so it doubles G2 max RAM size.

Regarding testing - yes, we used it in blade version of these AMD servers. We originally had BL685c G1 with 82xx CPU and 4GB modules used as ESX server, the we decided to replace CPUs and memory with newer 83xx Opterons together with biggest available 8GB DDR modules (these modelus were terribly expensive in those days!). These change was absolut success, as you mentioned boards are let say identical (there is small difference in CPU power cascade). We ran ESX on 2 such servers for 3 years without any issue, now are decomissioned and replaced by G7 and Gen8 AMD servers.

So - if you have some spare 8GB ddr2 modules - go and use them.
