The server will overheat, and possible shutdown due to over temp.

If you remove the lid, you will ruin the airflow, and the heat will not get out from the server.

I have tried that myself, by mistake.

I was troubleshooting a ML350 G4, wich had an extra drive cage installed, 3 SA641's and a total of 7 drives.
When I went home from work, i forgot to power off the server, and it was left overnight, powered on and no lid.
Next morning, it reported overheating on the drives, and I did burn my fingers on the drives.
I then put on the lid, and 1 hour later: temp was back to normal.

So never run the server without the lid .
